the big cover-up
last week i was listening to one of my favorite records of all time, eveningland by hem. i'm singing along to one of the songs when it all of a sudden hits me:
this is JACKSON! the johnny cash/june carter song! i know both songs and had never put 2&2 together to realize they were the same song. duh.
i actually like the cover a tick more than i like the original, which got me thinking:
what other covers are better (subjectively, of course) than the original?
right off the top of my head, here's what i came up with:
song - cover artist (original artist)
the ballad of el goodo - evan dando (big star)
$1000 wedding - evan dando & juliana hatfield (gram parsons)
song for you - whiskeytown (gram parsons)
the man who sold the world - nirvana (david bowie)
where did you sleep last nite? - nirvana (leadbelly)
feel free to add to the list...no answer is a wrong answer...

Are you sure there are no wrong answers? Because I like Joe Cocker's 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window' better than the original.
Don't stone me.
okay, there are some wrong answers, but even joe cocker can't get on that list...most of the list is comprised of terrible "updated" versions of christmas songs.
Madman,
I'll go with All Along the Watchtower, the Hendrix version. He's a better guitar player than
Dylan. :-)
oooh. that's a good one. i'll add to the list:
angel from montgomery - dave matthews (john prine).
that's really more of a 1a/1b since i like both versions, but i heard the dmb version first.
I recently noted that any cover of Wonderwall is better than the Oasis version. I also like Sonic Youth's Superstar over the Carpenters' (duh).
ps Chad---Dylan actually agrees with you =-)
