for the record

yes, i'm still alive. yes, i'm still here. yes, i still love you all (but YOU more than the others).

my goal is to get some "real" posting time tomorrow to recap the nashville and birmingham shows and maybe do some type of neato holiday contest thing or another.

till then, here's a link or two for your linking pleasure.

yuengling - my favoritest beer in the whole world. i've driven 4 hours to buy this stuff.
hem - i still can't get over this band.
the perfect christmas present - just in case you've got some extra scratch around the house.
my new toy - got it via fedex on friday. wahoo willie!
finally.
finally again.

wonderful collection of stamps

it's a line from a dylan song, but it's what i think of when i think of my friends: i have a wonderful collection of (immensely talented and supportive) friends.

it's good to have friends. it's also good to be a gangsta, but that's a different story for a different late nite.

here's two reasons why:

many thanks to my friend meshelle for allowing me to use her time and talent on my dumb face (the follow up single to my smash hit stupid mouth) this weekend. many more pictures were taken. the early report is that many more are as good as these.

hot damn, sam.

(ps - for all you late nite prowlers and early morning stalkers, i'll have a link to meshelle's site first thing tomorrow. blogspot makes it a pain in the ass to blog if you're a mac fella like myself.)

oh, what a feeling

first, thanks to everyone who came out to the show last nite at the 5spot. i hope you had as much fun as i did. in case you missed it, richard sexton was fun and interesting (and rather daring in that skirt), brian ritchey was engaging and wonderful, and i...well, i was wearing a coat - a first. for the first song or two anyway. i also had a globe lamp serving as a prop - also a first. it was fun playing a set that was a little more laid back and relaxed than the past few shows. it was also a lot of fun to play some songs i haven't played in a while - love and mercy (brian wilson), 13 (big star) & happenstance (yours truly), to name a few.

in other news, i did some new photos with my friend meshelle on saturday over around sylvan park/charlotte pike. we're both pretty excited about what we wound up with, so i'll get them on the website as soon as possible. that reminds me, if you're not currently getting my email updates, you need to send a message to info@newtondominey.net with the following in the subject line: newton, i'm sorry i've been such a tart. add me to your mailing list.

i'm off to birmingham tomorrow to rock and roll with garrison starr and nini camps. i'm debating on whether i should drive back tuesday nite or stay in some shit motel with a three pack of high life tallboys to get the true road experience. i think i'll pack a pillow and toothbrush just in case. if i can come up with wi-fi access, i'll be sure to post something tuesday nite or wednesday morning.

happy birthday, brooooooooooooooooooce!

okay, so it's not really the boss' birthday, but it IS the anniversary of one of the top 5 (thank you, rob) rock and roll records of all time. that's right, in case you've been living under a musical rock for the past month or so, today marks the release of the 30th anniversary remastered release of born to run. last nite i went and saw excerpts of the two dvds that come in the box set. i was a little excited. today, i couldn't get to the record store (okay, it was borders. i had to go during lunch. deal with it.) fast enough during lunch to buy my own copy. i opened it, smelled it (new cd's and new books have SUCH a good smell), popped in the cd, and turned it up to 27 - my amp goes way the f past 11. apologies to the guy smoking in the work parking lot for making you think i was a raving lunatic with a thing for beating on the steering wheel around 2p.

i don't care how many times i hear this record, i get chills every time thunder road fades in. knowing what i know about the recording process and story behind the making of the record only makes it that much better.

if you don't have this record, don't tell anyone. if you don't have this record, take your name off of the "rock and roll connissieur" master list. if you don't have this record, you're missing out.

all hail the boss and the creation of quite possibly the finest 39 minutes of music ever created.

newton's rock and roll party time

you wanted the best!!!
you got...
me (and friends)!!!
mark your calendars for this sunday, november 20th when yours truly will be playing at the 5spot in east nashville.
also playing will be my friends richard sexton and brian ritchey.
doors open some time after dark, music starts at 9.
if you don't want to watch the show from the street, bring $5.

missing: one jock strap, size small (has zubov written in red ink on the inside)

i saw my first hat-trick last nite as the nashville predators (YOUR nashville predators) beat the stew out of the minnesota dallas south stars (also known as the dallas stars, formerly known as the minnesota north stars).

steve sullivan scored three times, once in the 2nd and twice in the 3rd, and could've had 4 goals had he made the penalty shot he was awarded after getting mugged by a stars blueliner. here's the goal breakdown as i saw it from my seat in sec 326, row b, seat 1:

first goal: made marty turco look "special" with a shot fake, sending him to the ice to cover a low shot and then flipping it up to the top left of the net. thank you turco, may we have another...

second goal: got lucky. was trying to pass across the crease to a waiting and ready paul kariya, and hit turco (hereafter referred to as "the sieve") in the side with the "shot" that wound up bouncing into the net. sometimes it's good to be lucky. he shoots, he scores, you SUCK!

third goal: if anyone sees sergei zubov wandering the streets of nashville looking lost, he's trying to find any shred of dignity that might be left after getting TORCHED and humiliated by sullivan's stick handling as he moved the puck around the defenseman not once, not twice, not THRICE, but four damn times before poking the puck past the sieve (who gave it up more last nite than the easy girl in high school).

the video highlights of the game aren't up on the predators website, but should be later today or tomorrow. here's the link to that section for your viewing pleasure.

clap, clap...clap, clap, clap...let's go predators!!

success!!!

i've been sending press kits and cds out to any college with a radio station that's within 8 hours of nashville for the past few weeks. i got my first "add" yesterday!!! according to the program director at wndy (wabash university, crawfordsville, in) my ep...

"...could be top 40 stuff. John Mayer has romantic fling with Coldplay. If you like Mayer, you will love this."

i don't think i sound like john mayer, but i'd have a fling with coldplay if the circumstances were right.

if you live in or around wabash u, please give the station a call next week, thank them for adding me and request a song, preferably one of mine (and let me know when you do it...i have to track these things, you know).

and thus began the manic phase of the manic/depressive musician cycle...

reflections of captain numbnuts

many of you know that i'm building a room onto the back of my house. i've been working on the room since february and have made pretty good progress, considering that i can mostly only work on it during the weekends and have no training whatsoever in any of this stuff. i couldn't even build a skateboard ramp as a kid. up until yesterday, i'd been doing pretty well. no major screw ups or snafoos. however...the doo-doo hit the lasko last nite.

i installed plumbing over the weekend for a pet bathing tub (note: future homeowners will probably make this a sun room with a wetbar. for me and the wife, it's a pet grooming room.). i got my plumbing inspection yesterday. i mostly passed (i had an issue with the drain, but he passed me for now so i can move forward with insulation and drywall) and was thoroughly. fucking. stoked.

around 4p my phone starts blowing up with calls from the wife. i thought she just had a question or whatever and i'm busy at the day job so i hit the "ignore" button for the first 3 calls. i thought by the 4th i should pick up. the plumbing broke. blew up, even. all over the kitchen. she's freaking out because she can't get the lid off of the main water supply outside and doesn't know what to do and and and and. luckily, there were some neighbors outside who she flagged down that were kind (or scared enough) to help her shut off the water supply.

we have no accurate measurement of how long the water was flooding into the kitchen, but our guess is somewhere between an hour to 90 minutes. it was enough water to cover the kitchen floor, soak the rugs in the hallway, go through the baseboard/drywall into our bedroom (which shares a wall with the kitchen), and make all of our hardwood look like utter shit. we'll probably have to replace it. hopefully the bedroom carpet and drywall will be fine. my confidence, however, is shot.

i woke up twice last nite thinking i heard water running. we turned the main water supply off when we left the house today for fear of coming home and seeing the dogs swimming around the couch.

bob vila can suck on my balls for making this repair/remodeling stuff look so easy.

dammit.

3 games. 3 losses. that's how the last week has gone for my nashville predators. after starting a blistering (and record setting) 8-0, they've lost the last three games they've played.

now they're out in jill's neck o' the woods, where i'm confident they're going to turn it around tonite versus san jose. i can feel it.

west coast swings for central division teams are a drag. last nite's game started at 9.30 central. tonite's game starts at 9.30 central. that guarantees a drag-ass day at work the next day.

here's my good luck picture for the game tonite. enjoy.

this picture could've been taken last nite. somehow those refs got limber enough to skate around all nite with their heads up their asses. if the nhl fires 'em, they've got a future in cirque de soleil...
