everyone in here's on the guest list

at some point or another during my illustrious musical career i've been asked by almost everyone i know (and alot of people that i don't) if i can put them on the guest list for a show. i think this means that all my friends and acquaintances are either cheap or broke (and yes, i know who is who), since i'm not exactly scaring the fire marshall with my attendance numbers.

so, i'm putting everyone that reads this, along with everyone who doesn't, on the guest list for my show october 4th at the family wash in east nashville. i'll play at 9.30 next tuesday. it's a free show, and it's not a late one, so i expect to have people lined out the door to see me and my band the ibook (it's pronounced eeh-booke. it's french.) play some rock and roll tunes. i might even bust out the keyboard for a song.

so, to sum up: tues oct 4, the family wash, 9.30. you're invited (yes, you) and you're on the guest list (because you're special).

are you ready to mid-tempo?!?!?!?!
(elsewhere...)
saturday nite (oct 1) my friends dawson wells & the entourage, molly thomas, and the bees will be playing at hair of the dog in a saints marching in benefit show. here are a handful of reasons you should go:
-it only costs $10 to get in,
-all the bands and artists kick ass in one way or another,
-it's saturday nite,
-you're already getting in free to my show next week,
-the money being raised will be donated to hurricane relief efforts,
-nashville needs to prove that it has music fans who will get off their asses and who aren't afraid of mixing entertainment and charity.
i'll be out of town or i'd be playing this show. even if i wasn't playing i'd be going. be there.

the old "there goes another hero" trick

agent 86 has died.

as maxwell smart, don adams played one of my favorite characters on one of my favorite tv shows as a kid.

i loved the shoe phone, the cones of silence, the gadgets, and i even think i had a crush on agent 99. whoever made goonies must've patterned data after max.

don, thanks for making me a smarter kid.

i am diy

remember a few weeks ago when i told you that i'd been interviewed for a piece on wpln? well, it's out today. i was lucky enough to hear it driving to work. actually, luck had nothing to do with it, seeing as how i planned my entire morning around being in my car at precisely 8.33am (right after the traffic).

if you were not lucky enough to hear it you can go to wpln.org and check it out. as of right now (9.19) it's the main story on the main page: DIY Music. Or if you're so excited you just want to go straight to the audio, it's right here.

don't forget the big, big show at mercy lounge/cannery tonite to benefit hurricane katrina (and rita) victims. it just got turned into an 18+ show, so bring out your underage friends! david mead, matthew ryan, bill lloyd, the features, de novo dahl, robert reynolds and jason white are just a few of the bands and artists playing tonite. things get rolling at 7p.

9.23.2005

updates and shtuff

-so the show that i was trying to line up with matthew hebert on october 3rd isn't gonna happen. well, it's gonna happen, just not with me due to some logistical and timing issues. i still plan on being there, and you should too. from what i can tell, matthew's a cool dude that makes some cool music. he also has a blog, which you might be interested in.

-hurricane rita has been downgraded to a category 3. that still sucks, and there's still the threat of tornadoes and whatnot, but i'm not nearly as concerned now as i was earlier today.

-i had my final lunch with jill before she is no longer a nashvillian. good times were had by both as we devised our mutually seperate plans for global (or at least industry) domination. keep her in your thoughts as she makes the stressful 2000 mile trek across God's westward expanse towards the land of the cool.

-speaking of cool, the predators' first home preseason game is tonite. me and the wife will be there, her in her freshly autographed by scotty walker and tomas vokoun predators' cap and me in my homemade "we want tacos" tshirt. can you say, "hell yes," ladies and gentlemen?

-i officially "checked out" at work today around noon. oh, i'm here. just not here...

save a prayer...

my hometown's about to have the hell kicked out of it by hurricane rita. my dad called me this morning and said that, due to the geography and climate of the area, they're expecting the hurricane to stall out right on top of them. possibly 100mph wind, tornadoes, and 2 feet of rain. trust me when i say this isn't an area that can handle 2 feet of water in a short amount of time. stores are sold out of water and ice, gas lines are long, and there's gridlock in the streets. you'd think my hometown was huntsville, beaumont, orange...within 50-60 miles of houston or the coastal area.

my hometown is 225 miles north of houston.

if you haven't already, say a prayer for the people already affected and the people who will be affected by the hurricanes. while it appears that we'll be better prepared now than we were a few weeks ago, this is still gonna be a big, big mess. right next to the big, big, big mess currently being cleaned up.

if you haven't already, find a charity to get involved with, not just to donate $20 to and forget about it.

if you haven't already, make plans to attend one of the saints marching in shows in the next few days and weeks. some or all of the proceeds from each of these shows will go towards hurricane relief. if that isn't reason enough, a lot of these bands and artists are positively badass (and my friends).

(ps-what happened to "it won't be water, but fire next time?")

(insert busy here)

holy geez am i ever busy today. while i've been busy, i've been thinking of all the expressions/cliches used to say "that fella's busy." here's what i've come up with thus far:

busier than...
...a one armed man in a paper hanging contest.
...a one legged man in an ass-kicking contest.
...a two peckered dog in a forest.
...a turd in a room full of flies.

...your turn...

9.21.2005

check it out, yo

so in the past few days i've had the pleasure of meeting some pretty cool bands and musician types. they all lean towards the roots/americana side of the living room; very good saturday morning music. you oughta check 'em out.

carter little
matthew hebert
mars arizona

it's looking like i'll be playing with matthew at the radio cafe in east nashville on october 3rd. the minute that's confirmed i'll have flyers and emails and whosits and whatsits all over the place. i'm also trying to line up a mid october show with new york's the animators at the basement. details as i get 'em.

to quote fred durst: keep rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin'...

9.19.2005

welcome to the working week

i love mondays. especially mondays after a weekend of partying down and successful show playing. that's all the bitching that i'm gonna do. my weekend was great, my boss isn't in the office today, my dentist appointment went well, and i even got to see the wife for a second afterwards. all in all, not a bad start. and, AND!, i found out that i'm going to be in a story on wpln (nashville's npr station) and that it's going to air on september 26th. it's about the whole "diy" thing going on in music and should be very, very good (despite my being included). it's an early-birdy story, airing at 6.33 & 8.33 (a.m.), but you can also get it via podcast or on the wpln archive. if i can get permission, i'll get the podcast and then upload it to my website for everyone's listening pleasure.

so i had not one, but TWO people taking pictures saturday nite. you've got a few from my new pal shane below. as soon as i get a few minutes i'll low-res everything that needs low-resing and get them on the various websites.

wooderson, you guys disappeared faster than a fattie in the boogie van...where'd you run off to? thanks for coming out. especially all the way from chez wooderson. that's dedication, my man.

9.18.2005

show me whatchu got

first things first. jill, jag, et al.: sorry i missed the shakedown last nite. i didn't get to leave the basement until about 1.45 and was more than a little worn out. okay, now that i've got that out of the way.

last nite's show was very possibly the most bestest shows i've ever been a part of. not that i don't usually have fun and think i do an alright job, but last nite was one of those times when i felt like i really had the folks not on stage plugged in with the folk on stage. i've heard springsteen talk about feeling that "connection" and have felt it a little, but not like last nite. so, for all of you that came out (that includes you, wooderson), thanks for making it a great nite for me. i hope it was equally good for you.

the afternoon show at azalea park wasn't the best thing i've ever done, but it was fun. i decided to try a springsteen song on stage for the first time ever. it wasn't thundercrack, but it wasn't bad, either. the song in question is incident on 57th street, one of my top 5 springsteen songs. i got to meet jon raven, another musician/artist in town. nice fella. i also got to hang out with my pal dawson, drinking smuggled in busch beer and dedicating screwups to each other. good times, good times.

so at the nite show, this guy (found out that his name's shane later) walks up to me before i got going and asked if he could take some pictures of my set; he's an amateur photographer just wanting to try some stuff. he told me he'd let me download the pics off his camera before he left. not only were the pictures free and not only is shane a cool guy whose website i'll link in the next few days, but the pictures are really damn good. i've put a few of the thumbnails up and will have more on the "real" site later. keep looking for 'em.

here's what i'm givin' ya for now:
deja chucks

the only time you'll see me wear a stratocaster

hello, nashville. are you ready to mid-tempo?

9.15.2005

magic elixir

i ran across this little nugget of joy while killing time at kroger as the wife anguished over which whole wheat bread to buy. it was too good not to share. for your gawking and staring pleasure, may i present:
jogging in a jug

in case you can't read the big print there above johnny and janey fitness, it says:
THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT JOGGING IN A JUG PROVIDES ANY HEALTH BENEFITS.
now if that's not a marketing slogan for the ages, i don't know what is.

curiousity got the better of me, so i googled it. looks like these guys have made a name for themselves...

9.14.2005

cold toes

i realized today as i sat in predators' training camp how much i missed cold toes. i always leave hockey games with cold toes and, when i left camp today, i had cold toes. what a good feeling to have.
here are some pics from the 20 minutes i caught of the afternoon skate. everyone looked pretty good, but i didn't enough of a look to notice any shining stars or glaring holes. mostly they worked on one end of the ice doing 1on1, 2on2, and 3on3 drills.

most of the pictures are of guys standing around due to my
camera phone's inability to take pictures very quickly. all my
pictures of guys skating turned into pictures of open ice...
this is the only full-ice skating drill i saw. it was a pickoff/recover drill that simulated a player picking off a pass at center ice and a defenseman or forward trying to recover without hooking. trotzy spent a few minutes talking about positioning and how the guys couldn't use their sticks like they used to.

duh-rek-she-ons

so people have had lots of questions about azalea park. actually, they've had just one question:

where the hell is it?

good question.

here's what i got from someone over at dizzy's dog wash (who was very nice):
if you're coming up thompson lane (from green hills) turn left at the jersey mike's/rice bowl street. she thought it was called berry hill drive. you'll turn right onto azalea, either just before or just after the 12 oaks motel (the name might be wrong...just look for the sleazy hotel). azalea park is on that road. there's parking and everything.

that's about as close as i can get...

9.13.2005

top five records

damn rob for thinking of it first. i wish i could start my own record label called top five records. it'd be great. and not self indulgent at all.

the fellas over at tangled up in blue have started a "top five" discussion of their own. rex and jill weighed in, sarcastro, too. i just put my list up there.

one thing i noticed after making my list:

there won't be no slow dancing on my island.

here it is, for your critiquing...

the clash - london calling
elvis costello - armed forces (double disc reissue)
the jayhawks - hollywood town hall
the beach boys - pet sounds
wilco - a ghost is born

my "b" list includes:
miles davis - kind of blue or sketches of spain. i won't be picky
michael jackon - thriller. hell. yesssss.
the thrills - let's bottle bohemia. one of the new fantastic bands.
the beatles - revolver. shut up. i know it should be in my "a" list.
the replacements - all shook down. for when the solo party gets introspective.

gimme your list here. go over there and give it, too, for good measure.

newton the hermit

i spent the majority of my weekend holed up in my house, working on music stuff. i watched a little racing, watched a little football, but mostly just watched my computer monitor as i built new loops for "newton's live music bonanza." i've got to keep up with motley crue somehow, and the wife ain't cool with strippers on stage, so loops it is. i spent so much time in front of the computer that, every time i looked away from the monitor i could see a blue stripe (roughly the size of a pro tools track) - like i'd been staring at a lightbulb. no wonder i woke up with a headache today. when i wasn't looking at the "music" computer, i was looking at the laptop, tracking my fantasy football team (the nash-villains, thank you very much) and sending an email out to my massive fan base letting them know about saturday nite's big show.

my fantasy football team did alright, my
favorite nascar driver won the race, the titans did their best to make sure the predators have a big crowd on oct. 5, and training camp opened today. that's a pretty good weekend, if you ask me.

what'd you get into? anything fun?

(thanks to neilson for letting me use the wicked-cool picture of him.)

friday's rip off

here we go...another friday, another busier than it should be day, another ripped off post from yours truly. actually, it's by someone else, but i ripped it off on my own. thanks to these guys for not noticing or caring just yet. here we go:

Appetizer
Who is the easiest person for you to talk to?
it depends on what we're talking about but, more than anyone else, most of the time, it's the wife.

Soup
If you could live in any ancient city during the height of the quality of its society and culture, which one would you choose?
now's probably a good time to mention that i'm terrible at history. i'd probably go with greece. i know it's not a city, it's a country, but i'd want to see the whole thing. greece made us smart.

Salad
What is the most exciting event you've ever witnessed?
the nashville predators first home playoff goal, slightly ahead of the music city miracle, both witnessed live, in person, from the stands.

Main Course
If you were a celebrity, what would you do for a publicity stunt?

i'd have a contest to see who could make my favorite playlist. the winner would get a shirt. it would go over not so good. people would ask for a shirt despite not winning...

Dessert
What do you consider the ideal age to have a first child?
i'll let you know when i know for sure, but i'd think that you'd need to be able to have a later bed time than your kid, and be able to eat firmer foods through most of their developmental years. no parent should eat out of the same jar as their toddler.

get in the act, rip 'em off. tell me your answers...

9.08.2005

i left work early yesterday to go volunteer at 2nd harvest food bank for a couple of hours, sorting food for hurricane victims (and others). as i drove out to metrocenter, i was feeling pretty damn good about myself. here i was, a guy who had already given money, tried raising awareness, etc., who was going the extra mile to give his time. i'm here to tell you today:

i'm nothing. absolutely zero.

like i said, i show up ready to rock and on a little bit of a high horse. that ended pretty quickly when i met jeff. jeff was from new york and had been volunteering all week in the warehouse. i don't mean he grew up in new york. he flew in just to volunteer. for the week. then i met "the ladies." that's what i call them, since there were 6 of them and i didn't catch any of their names. they were school cafeteria administrators (or something like that) from all over middle tennessee. they were in town for a conference and, instead of doing what you and i would do - going to a bar afterwards, they decided to go sort food in a warehouse. i was humbled by both jeff's and the ladies spirit and willingness to pitch in.

a lot of times i see the "bad" americans when i look across the melting pot (which reminds me of how our immigration policy sucks, but that's a different story). i see the couple in france who complain about the food, the culture and refuse to learn even a hint of the native tongue. i see the rich guy who tells the homeless person to get a job, or who ridicules him instead of lending him a helping hand. i see the leaders who insist on an "our way or the highway" mentality. i see all those people that embarrass me; make me ashamed to be associated in any way with them.

and then, every so often, i run across the true citizens of our country. the jeffs and the ladies of our stew. these people see where help is needed and they go there. true american's aren't the assbags in franklin who are complaining about evacuees moving in their precious camelot (kudos to the mayor for telling them to shove it.). they're not the people i work with who see this event as a "great selling opportunity." it's the people who, like jeff and the ladies, see that help is needed and then go about the business of helping. it's people like that who need to be in power, to have influence. people who are all about the business of helping.

there are alot of things about our country and our government of which i am not proud. i rail about them all the time in private, sometimes in public. you may now scratch our citizens (as opposed to residents) off that list.

they make me proud to be an american.
~~~~
by the way, if you'd like to volunteer at second harvest, you may do so by just showing up. they're open from 9-7 m-f and from 9-4 on saturday. i'm going to try to be there tomorrow and saturday, if you'd like someone to go with.
9.07.2005
these are a few of my favorite words
someone dropped the p-word (no, not property) over at casa de what?!? earlier today. p-word, you say? yup.
poop.
one of my favorite words. it makes me think of grumpy old men or something when i hear it or say it. there's a bunch of those words that are a hoot (oh! there's another one.). some are just fun, some are more fan friendly versions of the "official" names of our parts and functions, some just feel good to say. here's my starter list:
-whiz. as in, "i gotta take a..", not the michael jackson musical.
-hurky jurky. like the way a 150lb, 6'2" 9th grader walks. yes, that was me.
-willy nilly. as in, "newton posts topics on his blog all willy nilly."
-junk. i don't care who you are, if you hear somene say, "ohhh, he got hit right in the junk," you're gonna laugh. garbage is an allowable substitute.
-doodie. right up there with poop.
-gaggle. i barely know what constitutes a gaggle, but i like using the word.
-shebang. not the ricky martin song, but the whole...
-balls. who doesn't like to use the word balls? we know fred durst does.
-meatloaf. what name better emulates the texture, feel and consistency of the food it names? the word rolls off the tongue with the same thud as the slab of meaty sludge when it hits your plate.
-great googly moogly. i guess that, technically speaking, this is a phrase, not a word. you might recall the snickers commercial where the guy's painting the endzone at arrowhead stadium (home of the chiefs). he's all done, admiring his work and someone walks up and says, "chefs." what's the old man say? great googly moogly. classic.
i guess that's a good list for starters. what'd i miss? did i leave off one of your favorites?
stone me
i admit it. i'm addicted. i fought it and fought it and fought it but, like they say, admitting it is the first step towards recovery. what am i addicted to?
house.
i can't get enough of it. in fact, i can't get enough of a lot of fox network's shows. prison break? winner. 24? never watched it, but i know it's good. that 70's show? duh. arrested development? malcom? king of the hill? the simpsons (i know you're humming the tune)? heck yes to all. sure they're also responsible for so you think you can dance, nanny 911, trading spouses and cops, but if you work the tivo right, you never have to watch that crap. back to what i was saying...
i'm watching house last nite and i'm riveted. it's a great episode, season finale even. cliffhanger. so at the very end, house puts on you can't always get what you want by the stones. and it hits me: i'm excited about the new stones record. i haven't EVER been excited by a new stones record, mostly because all their classics were released before i was. i've heard it's going to be more like beggars banquet and less like bridges to babylon (yes, yes, i know...has anybody seen my baby was a good song). the raw and edgy stones, not the processed, only-releasing-records-so-they-can-sell-tickets-at-$500-a-pop stones.
i'm sure grimey's gonna be pissed, but i think i might have to go down the street during lunch and pick me up a new record. what do you guys think?
9.06.2005
fall, season of renewal?
i don't know about you guys, but i can't think of anything i'd rather do on a long weekend than retool my website. so that's just what i did this weekend. please take a few minutes to visit the new bright and shiny newtondominey.net. and pleeeeeease let me know what you think. i'm no web design genius, so if there's something that doesn't work like it should or if my site looks like it belongs to an east german-avante-garde-appalachian-rap-group, i'd appreciate the heads up.
click on the sample to be whisked away...
(captain's log, 2.17pm, sept 6, 2005: by whisked away, i don't mean that if you click on the picture above you'll all of the sudden be in some type of 6th dimension or anything. it's just going to send you to my website. i just wanted to clarify since, thanks to the wonders of sitemeter, i can tell that none of you have taken me up on my offer. unless, of course, sitemeter's messed up. i guess i'm just excited and paranoid all at the same time.)
help
my dad's a former baptist preacher, a former off shore oil rig foreman who used to work off the coast of new orleans. my aunt lives, lived rather, in biloxi, ms. i used to drive through slidell, la twice a year to go to my grandparents' house in deep east texas. i've lived in mississippi, i've driven across lake ponchartrain. the gulf region holds a very special place in my heart. my heart breaks for the people that have had their lives turned upside down by the hurricane. my heart is angry because of the way this has been handled. i'm trying (rather unsuccessfully) to put my anger aside and use that energy to help others.
my aunt, who worked at one of the casinos that was "relocated" by the hurricane, has been in contact with my grandmother. my dad's talked with the lady whose phone she used to call. her and her kids are homeless, but thankfully alive and okay. they are, hopefully, on their way to my dad's place, possibly to mine or my brother's to start over.
please give until you have nothing left to give. if you have room in your house or apartment, please consider opening it to someone who lost theirs because of the hurricane. please donate as much of your time and resources as you can give (not as much as you can spare). the people you are helping are sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, uncles and...aunts.
there are numerous ways you can help the relief and recovery efforts in louisiana, mississippi, and alabama. if you know of others, please use the comment section of this post to list them. here are a few that i've got:
salvation army
moveon.org
habitat for humanity
cnn help center
disaster relief effort
noah's wish
here are some other links that have been sent to me, but i don't have the time create the html for the links for everything. some are for information, some are for volunteering.
so long, boston. i hardly knew ye...
what a week, what a week. after spending last weekend in california with the wife, i packed my bags, grabbed my trusty guitar, and hopped on a plane to boston wednesday morning to play a show that nite with my friend amelia white (yes, that rhymes). after a few luggage inspections, 1 layover, 1 promised 2 hour delay in newark, a brief panic attack, and a subsequent reduction in the delay by an hour, i landed in boston ready to rock. turns out you can't just show up and rock in boston. you've got trains to catch and walkin' to walk. so an hour, and some serious sweating, later, i loaded in and got ready to go. thanks to my friend chad, i had a pretty fair turnout and things went swimmingly.
amelia's set was brilliant. she's a very sweet and fun lady who plays with a band full of great guys who were all very nice and made me feel right at home. her guitar player, russell, is a grade-a badass. you'll have the chance to see them both at family wash next friday, september 9th. i can't recommend this show enough. now, back to me...
after an evening of revelry and alcohol, i caught a few hours of sleep on chad's floor before heading back out to catch my 8.30 flight back home. (note: security guys at logan airport are hardasses. i thought they were going to take my guitar because it had a 9 volt battery inside it.). upon landing, i drove straight home, took a shower and headed back out to go work for the man. you'd think that after all that, i'd go straight home and go to bed.
you'd think wrong.
i went down to the flying saucer for mr. roboto's shindig. after having a few beers with jag, jill, jag2, chris, brittney, mr. roboto et al, i headed home, told the wife hello and goodnite, and collapsed into bed around 10. and here we are...
to sum up, here are the lessons i've learned this week:
-you won't make any friends with airport security when you ask them if they thought you were going to shive someone with the needlenose pliers they took out of your gig bag.
-you also won't make friends with airport security if you ask them if they've ever seen an acoustic guitar with a 9-volt battery in it.
-flying whilst hungover is the most surefire way to barf on an airplane.
-watching that thing you do while flying hungover is the best way to avoid throwing up on an airplane.
-a sensible person would NOT go to the day job the afternoon after going to boston, playing a show, drinking too much, sleeping too little and being harrassed by airport security.
-a sensible person would NOT go to a bar with friends and acquaintances for an evening of revelry after going to work the day after they went to boston to play a show, drink too much, sleep too little and be harrassed by airport security (and a partridge in a pear tree).
-i am not a sensible person.
i have some pictures of amelia's set that i'll try to post in the next couple of days. don't forget what i said about next friday. it's a can't miss event!
